Last week, I took a trip up to AS220, where I've been asked to join the Board of Directors. In the past sixteen years, I've been involved with AS220 in various capacities (most recently as a present-in-cyberspirit systems co-admin), and I'm honored by the opportunity to get involved more deeply.
Now, I need to find some concrete things to get plugged into. One thing that intrigues me is the Broad Street Studio. Years ago, Shawn and I talked about some sort of technology-based youth outreach (to let you know how long ago that was, we were thinking of a public access internet lab using dumb terminals). What I'm thinking of now is some kind of digital media program.
Here's one idea:
- I need to convince folks who are upgrading from one and two megapixel cameras this holiday to donate their old models to AS220 (a non-profit charity).
- Then I need to make sure AS220's computers have the right software for importing and managing the photos.
- Next, we'll set up a liberal loan policy for the cameras (leave your library card, walk out of the building with a camera).
- Finally, I'd offer some classes at AS220 where I teach them the basics of digital photography, importing pictures from the camera, and using them in print and web media.
I think this could be pretty cool. I just need to find a bunch of cameras, and the rest will fall into place.
