I'm a cheap bastard when it comes to software, though I usually end up buying lots of it in the end. But last night, hardware triumphed over software.
I have a 20GB drive in my Pentium III that was occupied by Win2k (one 20GB partition, but only using about 6GB of space). But, I wanted to install .NET Server alongside it. The easy way would be to run out and drop $70 on a copy of Partition Magic, but since I've already spent money on Norton SystemWorks, which includes Ghost, I figured why not use that to accomplish the same thing?
The only problem is that I don't have a spare desktop-sized hard drive. However, I do have a 12GB laptop hard drive that's usually in my Thinkpad's spare hard drive adapter. And, I also have an adapter that plugs a laptop hard drive into a regular EIDE connector. So, I unplugged my DVD drive, plugged that 12GB drive into the secondary IDE controller, and Ghosted my Win2k install to that hard drive. I repartitioned my 20GB drive with 2 partitions, restored Win2k to the first one, and installed .NET Server RC1 on the second. Now I'm watching the SSCLI compile under .NET Server. Cool.
I'm sure I'll still go out and buy a copy of Partition Magic, but I like to defer expenditures as long as I can...
