Slashdot has a good discussion going on about whether to buy or build your own x86 computer. I'm a big fan of building my own, partly for the fun of building it, but also because it puts the price vs. performance tradeoffs totally in my hands. This comment was helpful to me, and you can also find plenty of good posts by reading the comments with a threshold of 5. +1 on all the suggestions about newegg. I've bought a lot from them, and I've always had a good experience.
