Transvirtual is another company with an interesting open source-based business model. From the KaffePro product page: "KaffePro is an easy step up from Kaffe.org's Kaffe virtual machine, which is the most popular free software virtual machine. For commercial needs, KaffePro is the ideal step up from Kaffe, as it allows for more legal licensing flexibility, the incorporation of proprietary 3rd-party and patented technologies."

John Carroll: "open source must rely on the willingness of programmers to contribute code without financial compensation." Whenever I hear someone make that claim, I point them to companies like Sleepycat Software, who uses GPL-style licensing as a carrot for some, a stick for others. I like the multiple licensing approach that Sleepycat uses, but there are many possibilities that the community is only beginning to explore.

I'm giving two talks at National Web Security 2002 in Singapore on July 4th. I'm going to put in some tourist time while I'm there, and I'm really looking forward to this trip.
