HP OfficeJet d135 and Vista Beta 2
If you’re trying to get an OfficeJet d135 working with Beta 2 of Vista, you’ll probably get an error when you try to install the driver. If, like me, you did an upgrade installation from a previously-working XP installation, your printer may just mysteriously stop working.
I found that the DeskJet 990c driver that’s built into Vista works fine, and handles color as well as the two-sided printing accessory. (If you want to change your driver, open the Control Panel, click Printers under Hardware and Sound, and then right-click on the printer. Instead of choosing Properties, choose Properties from the “Run Elevated” sub-menu. Then use the Advanced tab to change the driver).

One wonders why on earth a print driver should need to run with elevated permissions. That’s like running as root on anything UNIX-like, isn’t it?

Augie,
That elevated permissions part is to allow the user to modify the preferences. It’s sprinkled all over the place in the current beta of Vista. There’s a lot you can’t do without running with elevated permissions. I’ve found that some programs, such as VMware server, behave different (anything from certain options being greyed out to flat out quirkiness) unless you run with elevated permissions (which are, of course, the normal set of permissions people are used to using under XP and earlier).

I am trying to install a HP OfficeJet d135 on my new HP computer (Windows XP, Media Centre Edition, ver 5.1). The printer worked fine on my older computer and I do not have the original installation disc so I have downloaded from HP the driver installations. When I launch the .exe file, it wants to uninstall any previous versions, and during this I continue to get an error message as it trys to access a .ini file. Could your comments above help me?

Linda,
You should give this a try; if it doesn’t work out, you can just delete the 990c printer and try a different approach.

It seems HP is not fully supporting the Officejet d135 in Windows Vista. Many features are not available with the Microsoft driver that comes with the retail Vista. Visiting HP’s website verifies this, and even includes this message:
“You might find that some of the advanced features are no longer available when using this basic driver. You can upgrade to an HP product that is fully compatible with Windows Vista if the advanced features are necessary.
To help you decide what product to upgrade to, the following tool will be helpful as you make your decision:

I think purchasing a NEW printer is a pretty pathetic solution. These are NOT advanced features–these are basic features that anyone would expect to have when buying this printer. HP is basically leaving us high-and-dry by not making a full driver-set for Vista.
