High School Students Terrified by Drug War/DHS Lockdown

Thursday, March 16th, 2006

Last Friday, South Kingstown High School officials terrified students and parents by announcing a “code blue” lockdown. With teachers and students kept in the dark about the true nature of the lockdown, text messages and cell phone calls flew through the ether as people wondered whether an act of violence was in progress. It didn’t help that students were forced to huddle in a corner of the room while shades were drawn, doors were locked, and lights were turned off.

As it turns out, it was a combined homeland security drill/drug sweep (those two seem to go together like milk and cookies these days). The students were kept in a state of fear and uncertainty for 45 minutes while the police searched for their bounty.

Their catch? One joint.

The price? Terrified children who will be less trustful the next time they are told to do something to protect their own safety.
