500kbps in San Diego

Monday, September 29th, 2003

Bugwart
points to a report from Deutsche Bank
on the 1xEV-DO rollout in San
Diego (thanks to Emory for
calling my attention to this). The report touches on a number of things
3G, and is well worth a read. I even printed out a copy, and I hardly
every print anything. Here’s a delightful quote from the report:

Using FTP to receive megabyte files, we recorded
average data rates that were typically in the 500-800kbps range
while observing peak data rates (done using the aforementioned
software package on the Windows 2000 notebook) that reached 1.2Mbps.

Meanwhile, Alan Reiter discusses
the Verizon 1xEV-DO press release that complements the Deutsche Bank
report.

P.S. San Diego will be home to next year’s Emerging Technology
conference, so start stocking up on 1xEV-DO equipment today!

Managed Code Better than Sex?

Saturday, September 27th, 2003

A great review of Shared Source
CLI Essentials
just appeared on Amazon: “Well, there I was sitting
on my bed with my new book. I opened the first page and didn’t surface
again for 9 days; it’s that good i read it cover to cover, twice! I
found it not only intellectually exciting, but also quite arousing; the
way they talk about managed code gave me a right chubby one!” (screenshot
available
in case they pull it)

Building the worldwide camera phone business

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2003

Reiter’s Wireless Data
Web Log
: “There still are many people who don’t believe camera
phones will spark huge business opportunities. I call these
people….wrong! They don’t get it. They don’t see what’s already
happening and they can’t see what will happen. All they see are
today’s fuzzy photos of cats and don’t understand the changes occurring
that will affect tomorrow.”

Wi-Fi in Cincinnati Delta Terminal

Saturday, September 20th, 2003

T-Mobile has a hotspot here in one of those fancy airport lounges that
I’ve never been into. I can pick up a weak signal that drops in and out
in the food court area, but that was no good, so I tried a few different
gates, and found the best signal (1 to 2 bars) at gate B12.
